5 Signs it Might be Time to Sell

Did you know that the average Canadian spends 10 years in their home before selling? Because of this, the average homeowner will own 4-5 houses within their lifetime. How long have you lived in your current home? When you look around it, what do you see? Does it make you smile? Do you still feel the same way you felt about it when you first moved in? Or are you looking around and seeing flaws everywhere? Are you wondering why you even moved there in the first place? Owning the wrong house for the current chapter of your life can be much like a bad relationship. In other words, it probably means it is time to part ways. If you are beginning to feel this way about your home, it might be time to move on. Check out these 5 signs it might be time to sell your house.

#1. Not Enough Space

The number 1 of 5 signs it might be time to sell your house is because it is just too small. This could be because of a growing family. Maybe everybody is working from home and there isn’t enough space for both business and pleasure. Perhaps the kitchen isn’t large enough for the new love of cooking that you have acquired. Maybe your clothes don’t fit in the closet anymore and you need more storage space. Or maybe you want to finally have a garage to park your car in so you don’t have to brush or scrape ice ever again! There are so many reasons why people need more space. This is why it is the number one sign it might be time to sell. At some point in our life, we all outgrow our home and need something bigger!

#2. Too Much Space

On the flip side, maybe you just don’t need the amount of space that you currently have. For instance, empty-nesters whose children have moved away. They no longer need a 4 or 5 bedroom home anymore and may begin thinking about downsizing. Or, it could be that when you purchased your home you thought you were going to have more kids than you ended up having. Now there is too much extra space. Perhaps your large home is much more expensive in upkeep than you had imagined. In order to keep the bills a little lower, you might need a smaller house. In conclusion, there are tons of reasons that you have too much space. This is why it can be a huge reason you would want to sell your home.

#3. The Location Isn't Ideal

Location, location, location! Location may be the number 1 reason why you moved into your current home. However, things change and priorities change which could mean that the location isn’t ideal anymore. Perhaps you started a new job that is farther away from home. Maybe your parents fell ill and you need to be closer to them to help out. Or, maybe your children have moved far away and you want to be closer to them. Maybe your children are just starting school and they need to be within a certain school district. (If you are looking for great schools in the Ottawa area, check out our awesome blog post with the top schools!). Above all, the location of your home is an important aspect of your happiness and well-being. This is why you need to make sure that you are in a location that works best for you!

#4. You Hate Your Neighbours

Unfortunately, the wrong people around you can really ruin the place you live in. Sometimes you have noisy neighbours who are constantly having parties and maybe even having the cops being called. Other times you may have a pesky neighbour whose dog is always doing his business on your front lawn. Some neighbours keep their front lawns in such a mess that you can barely even see the front of their house. Not to mention the tacky Christmas decorations every year. Much of the time people dislike their neighbours because of their pets or children, which can both be a loud and annoying nuisance. No matter what the reason is that you don’t like your neighbours, maybe it is time to move far, far away from them. Hopefully, you will get along with the people in your new neighbourhood a little better!
